An Autism Friendly Hospital - £45,000
A visit or stay in hospital can be an anxious time for anybody, but for young people with autism the experience can be particularly frightening and overwhelming.
Creating a hospital environment which is accessible and suitable for the complex needs of a child with autism will dramatically improve the hospital experience for these patients and their loved ones. As people with autism are known to process information that is presented visually much more easily than verbally, we would like to create artwork and signage, both pictorial and tactile, to display around the hospital. This unique signage system would help children and families process information about what is in a room before entering and provides simple but effective information that the young person can understand, helping them to feel more comfortable and confident in the hospital environment. This signage would also assist those who have English as a second language, learning disabilities or who are partially sighted.
