Story: Mark is running in honour of his two-year-old son Jacob, who is being treated by the paediatric oncology team on Ward 84.
Jacob was diagnosed with (Embryonal) Rhabdomyosarcoma of the pelvis in February 2018, when he was just 16 months old. He began cycles of chemotherapy in March 2018 and alongside this had 28 sessions of radiotherapy at a cancer hospital in the summer. Sadly, despite these treatments and two further courses of intensive chemotherapy in early 2019, his tumour grew. Jacob is now part-way through a clinical trial, which has shown some encouraging initial results, so Mark and the whole family are keeping their fingers crossed this continues.
Mark said: “Jacob has been amazing throughout his treatment, taking it all in his stride. He’s a real fighter and his determination and smile have given us strength. He’s learned to walk and talk while in the hospital and is quite the expert in naming and taking his medications.”
Mark’s thoughts on Team 10: "I was shocked, proud and felt very honoured when I was asked. It was an immediate ‘yes’. I’m not sure Jacob understands that Daddy is doing a very special run, but I’m really excited by it all. I’m hoping Jacob and my wife Ness will both be there to cheer me on."
